Introduction

We would like to explicitly point out, that Turkey is a wonderful country and the world famous hospitality of Turkish people is absolutely amazing. But being on vacation or a business trip is quite different from buying property and living in Turkey. Still Turkey is a perfect investment place. It has not yet been fully recognized as the perfect retirement heaven it really is.

START the first Property Protection Association for Real Estate Owners in Turkey was founded after extensive research, which showed the absolute necessity for such an organisation.

We finally ended up at UIPI, the International Union of Property Owners, representing more than 40 countries and their local organisations. When we checked for “Turkey” we saw ‘Sorry unfortunately not yet a member’.

We contacted Mr. Stratos Paradias, the President of UIPI. Please find below an excerpt of his email

.......... Thank you indeed for your message. It is true Turkey is not represented in UIPI. I have searched many times to find such an organization in your country, and I have even tried many times to find contacts in the bigger cities in order to create one. Now that Turkey is on its European way, such an organization is more than ever necessary. So once your association is legally established, ......... your membership to UIPI, starting from 1.1.2008.

These encouraging words stimulated the founding members to double their efforts and the result is START.

Based on personal experience, and the reports of friends, the information found on the internet forums, it was clear that here is an enormous lack of REAL information for buyers and investors.

The information you need when you want to buy real estate or settle down in Turkey is spread all over the internet, mostly only in bits and pieces, nothing complete and more often than not, half true or not true at all.

The available sources were and are not unbiased, Emlaks and construction companies are interested in selling apartments and villas and will certainly not give you the "real" information. Sometimes even lawyers and accountants can't be trusted.

Please note that most problems arise from a lack of communication, missing Turkish language skills, not knowing the mentality and the local habitudes.
